View RecordsCompare online background check sites by the report you actually need, source coverage, dispute path and employer or tenant screening rules; avoid unsupported rankings.
For personal research into one known case, the official court or agency record is usually the useful starting point. For hiring, choose a service designed for employment screening; for rental decisions, choose tenant screening. Those products can combine different records and have different legal workflows. A people-search subscription should not be assumed suitable for a hiring or housing decision simply because it advertises background information.
Write down the question before comparing prices: which person, which jurisdictions, which years and which record types must be checked? Decide whether you need a verified case disposition, driving record, credential verification or broader consumer report. No controlled accuracy comparison of providers was conducted for this guide, so it does not award an unsupported “most accurate” ranking or promise that one website finds every record.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists employment, tenant and other consumer-reporting companies with report-access contacts. The directory describes itself as current as of January 2025, not exhaustive, and based partly on company self-descriptions the Bureau has not independently verified. Inclusion is not a comparative quality rating or a determination that a particular service is legally suitable for your planned use. Treat it as a starting list and verify the current product.
The CFPB entry for First Advantage Corporation describes background screening and post-hire workforce monitoring. Its separate First Advantage Resident Solutions entry concerns tenant screening for property managers, owners and leasing agents. These illustrate why a familiar company name is not enough: identify the actual report, intended audience and company responsible for disputes. They are examples, not endorsements or evidence of better coverage than a competitor.
Both CFPB entries list a free consumer report once every 12 months upon request and give the First Advantage Consumer Center contact, 800-845-6004, P.O. Box 105292, Atlanta, GA 30348-5292. The tenant entry also links a report-request form. Requesting your own available file can reveal what a company actually holds; it is different from buying a new package covering jurisdictions it has not already searched.
Ask shortlisted providers for the same written search scope and a sample with personal details removed. Can you identify each source, jurisdiction, search date and case status? Ask how identity is matched beyond a common name, how duplicate cases are handled, and whether a database hit is verified against the originating court. The FTC identifies wrong-person, incomplete-outcome, duplicate, outdated and sealed-record information as common tenant-report problems.
Compare the total for the same package, including court-access charges, extra jurisdictions, manual verification, delivery and optional monitoring. Check whether the price is per report, an introductory period or a recurring subscription, how cancellation works and whether a failed search still incurs a charge. No verified universal package price is quoted here: a low entry price cannot establish equivalent coverage. Save the final scope and terms with the order confirmation.
For a consumer report used in employment, the FTC describes a standalone written disclosure and written permission before the employer orders the check. Before a negative decision based on it, the employer must give the person the report and FCRA rights summary. After such a decision, the person must receive the reporting company’s contact details, dispute rights and the right to request a free report within 60 days. Confirm the service supports those steps and applicable local requirements.
A tenant report can affect more than acceptance: a larger deposit, higher rent or a required cosigner may also be an adverse decision based on screening. FTC guidance says the notice must identify the reporting company and explain dispute rights and the free report available if requested within 60 days. Ask the landlord which company was used, get the report and compare the underlying case outcome rather than relying only on a score or recommendation.
Choose a provider whose consumer contact and dispute instructions are easy to find. When an error appears, identify the exact entry and provide copies of supporting documents to the reporting company; also address errors with the original source where necessary. The CFPB company entries describe a free reasonable investigation of disputes. Keep submission and response records, review the revised report, and ask that a corrected employment report be sent to the employer.
If a site will not state its permitted uses, what its package excludes, the charge commitment or who corrects a mistaken result, there is insufficient information to choose it for an important decision. For a single disputed case, start with the official disposition and use it to test the screening report. For a broader application, match the requester’s requirements to a documented screening scope rather than purchasing a generic “complete” search.
